By Bread Alone: The Story of A-4685

Mel Mermelstein

Published 1979, Crescent Publications 978-0-9606-5340-9

Powerful and readable, this narrative carries you along with young Mel as he struggles through Nazi occupation and incarceration. The inclusion of many photographs, documents, and newspaper articles buttresses the horrors of the tale. Losing both his parents and his brother and two sisters, Mel survived multiple camps, typhus, and a death march to emerge a survivor.

Mel is the creator of the exhibit at the Orange County Holocaust Education Center. Artifacts from Auschwitz brought together to form images and stories of his experiences, Mel processed the horrors described in his book by creating artwork. His mission remains to tell the tale of what he and his family experienced so future generations can learn.
